While here in the United States, soccer is definitely not the most popular sport, in the United Kingdom, soccer (or football, as they call it) is king. That is why Nissan decided to become the newest sponsor for the most prestigious soccer club tournament there, the Champions League.
The Champions League is part of the overall European soccer governing body, the UEFA.
This sponsorship is a big step in Nissan’s goal to become the top Asian brand in Europe. Based on last year’s sales, Nissan ranks third, but is only a hair away from number two, Hyundai, and less than 100,000 vehicles away from top-ranking Toyota.
“European growth is important to Nissan, and in UEFA we feel we have found the perfect partner to help us achieve our business goal of becoming the #1 Asian car manufacturer in Europe by 2016,” said Bastien Schupp, vice president, Marketing, Nissan Europe, in a statement.
We think this is a great move for Nissan and will greatly increase its presence in the European market. And, hopefully, by 2016, we can all yell, “Goal!” when Nissan is number one.
